Faculty Overview

The Faculty of Computing, Health and Science comprises:

COHESION MagazineThe Faculty produces a quarterly magazine, COHESION, showcasing the Faculty's activities within the community, teaching and learning, research, and internationally. The magazine is managed by Bryan Garnett-Law.

The Faculty is very active within the community, operating several long standing programs including the Mathematical Problem Solving Program, TripleS Science Fairs (in conjunction with other WA universities), ECU Siemens Science Experience and LabRats.

ECU Staff ID Card

When you have signed your contract for your period of employment, it will be processed by the University Administration and you will be assigned a Staff ID number. Until this is issued, you are unable to proceed with other formalities. Contact your School Senior Administrative Officer / Office Manager.

To enable use of any of the University facilities you will need a Staff ID Card. Take your ID number and visit the Media area where you will be issued with an Edith Cowan University ID card with photograph. This needs to be taken to the Library for coding to enable you to borrow books and other materials. Make sure you carry your ID card at all times. For access to computing laboratories or media facilties, you should obtain a Swipe Card form which needs to be signed by your relevant supervisor. Contact your relevant School Senior Administrative Officer / Office Manager.

ECU Parking Permit

If you are driving to work you will need to arrange an ECU Parking Permit. Parking at ECU is divided into several zones:

  • Yellow - Reserved
  • Blue - Staff
  • Red - Students

Temporary parking permits are available from your area's administrative officer, you will need to know your vehicle registration number and the parking zone in which you normally park. Temporary parking permits are usually only valid for one day.

Building 1(Chancellery) Joondalup Restrictions - Cars using LPG gas are not permitted to park underneath the building.

Keys and Access Cards

Once you have your Staff ID and Staff ID Card you should apply for key(s) to your office and an after-hours access card.

After hours admission to buildings is by access card. This is obtained through your School Senior Administrative Officer, if applicable. Security must be notified (ext 3333) when accessing buildings after hours and notified again when you leave.

In case of emergency, there are security telephones situated on each campus to contact Security Officers directly or by pager.

It is important that when you are about to go on leave that you remember to modify your voicemail messages and use the Outlook Out of Office Assistant to setup an automatic reply to e-mail messages whilst you are away.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your details in the ECU Staff Directory are kept up-to-date. To update your details, click Update, and complete the relevant details.

Campus Maps

ECU has three campuses, two in the city (Joondalup, Mt Lawley) and a regional campus located at Bunbury. Interactive and PDF campus maps are available for all campuses.

Campus Food Outlets

ECU campuses have several food outlets. During semester breaks these services operate on reduced hours.

Mail Distribution

ECU's Facilities Management Office coordinates internal mail, Australia Post and courier services across ECU campuses. Internal mail deliveries are made twice daily, external mail via Australia Post on a daily basis. Courier deliveries must be taken to the mail room on your campus along with a completed Courier Request Form.

Coloured bags are used when sending mail, additional bags can be obtained from the mail room upon request:

  • Yellow - Internal mail
  • Blue - Australia Post

For large volume mailouts please contact the mail room to obtain an appropriate bag.

Professional Development

Professional Development regularly run a wide range of useful training programs throughout the year. For a full list of programs offered by Professional Development visit the ORIAN website.

Teaching and Learning Development, within Learning and Development Service Centre, provide a range of academic training programs.

For staff who are new to teaching the following courses are offered:

  • PDC112 Teaching @ ECU : Sessional Teaching (Sessional Staff)
  • PDC113 Teaching @ ECU : Principles and Practices
Occupational Safety and Health

It is mandatory for all new staff to attend the Occupational Safety and Health training.  The program is designed to introduce staff to OS&H legislation and implications for ECU.  The training includes manual handling, ergonomics and fire and emergency procedures and is generally run in February, May and September.  Enrol on the web at http://orian.ecu.edu.au/.

Leave

All fixed term and ongoing employees must apply in advance for annual receration leave, long service leave and other leave as per ECU Staff Agreements.

General Staff

  • Annual Recreation Leave and Time Off In-Lieu (TOIL) may be applied for via the Staff Kiosk.
  • The Faculty requires that general staff clear Annual Recreation Leave in the year in which it falls due.
  • Application for other forms of leave requires completing a  leave application form.

Academic Staff

  • Annual Recreation Leave and Time Off In-Lieu (TOIL) may be applied for via the Staff Kiosk.
  • Application other forms of leave requires completing a leave application form.
  • The Academic Enterprise Bargaining Agreement requires that academic staff clear Annual Recreation Leave in the year in which it falls due.

When you are to go on leave, remember to carry out the following tasks prior to leaving:

  • Update your voicemail message to indicate you are currently on leave and who the caller should contact during your absence
  • Within Outlook (PC) use the Out of Office Assistant to setup an automatic reply message to anyone who send you an e-mail during your absence
  • Remind your supervisor of the period you will be away
  • Leave a reminder to update your voicemail upon your return, and to turn off the Out of Office Assistant within Outlook.

Staff Amenities Fund

The Staff Amenities Fund (tea, coffee, milo) is payable to the University Cashier as one payment for each semester by sessional staff. Fixed term and ongoing staff can have this deducted from their pay on a fortnightly basis by completing the Staff Amenities Fund Form available from Campus Administration or relevant Senior Administrative Officer / Office Manager. This allows unlimited access to tea, coffee and milo from the staff room.

You might also like to provide your own coffee cup so that it can be as mobile as you are during the day. It can be stored in the staff room, or taken away with you

ECU operates under a Standard Operating Environment which governs the purchase of all computers, printers and PDAs. When contacting the IT Service Desk you will need to provide your machines HD number eg HD056911 when seeking assistance.
